Betweenorigin of one of the pioneers of mezcal production in Oaxaca is shrouded in mystery. Locals say that one Sunday in the plaza, back in 1880, during the festival dedicated to the Holy Christ of Tlacolula, patron saint of the town, after a torrential downpour forced the people of the market to take shelter, Petrona Sánchez -second wife of Don Rómulo Chagoya- on her way home, found a child of barely five years of age on the side of the church atrium, who was crying inconsolably. When she questioned him to find out where he came from and got no answer, Petrona took him in her arms and took him to her husband, who began a search for the child's parents, whose fine clothing, physical features, skin and eye color clearly showed that he did not belong there.

After some time and all hope of finding the little boy's family was exhausted, Don Rómulo decided to adopt him and baptize him with the name Jorge Chagoya Sánchez. The boy grew up alongside Juan and Dolores Chagoya Llaguno, children from Rómulo's first marriage. Jorge stood out for his indomitable and restless character that led him to venture into activities different from the average of the time.
